How do I know my Mercedes Chassis Code
There are many ways to know your Mercedes’ Chassis Code.
- The easiest way to know your Chassis code is to spot your car’s Data Card located on the body pillar inside the driver door. Here you can find a sticker that has recommended tire pressure. Here will also appear a code on the right side. The first three digits here will be your car’s chassis code.

What does a Mercedes-Benz Chassis Code look like?
A Mercedes Chassis code looks like this. It basically consists of one Alphabet followed by 3 digits, a dot and then 3 digits. It would look like:
X X X X . X X X
The first character, or “Chassis Prefix”, would be either one of the alphabets ‘A’, ‘C’, ‘R’ or ‘W’ followed by a 3 digit number.
For example, W 124.019 is the chassis code for the E-Class car model E 200 sold between 1984 and 1997 with a 2.0 L M111.940 in-line 4-cylinder Engine
What does a Mercedes-Benz Chassis code mean?
Chassis Prefixes
- ‘W’ is used to denote short wheelbase sedans as well as SUVs. By far, ‘W’ is the widely seen and common prefix among all the possible prefixes. For example, the W 124 was a sedan produced by Mercedes Benz between 1984 and 1997
- ‘V’ is used to denote long wheelbase sedans or Limousine. Quite obviously ‘V’ means the S-classes including both the standard as well as extended wheelbase models.
- ‘R’ is used to denote 2-seater roadsters. The car model series ‘R’ points to would be the SL and SLK cars. These are the cars with a removable or foldable hard-top
- ‘C’ is used to denote a coupe. Here it is interesting to note that the Chassis Code Prefix and Model Prefix are both the same. These ‘C’ models all come with a fixed hardtop
- ‘S’ is used to denote ‘Estate’ or station wagons, usually E-Classes
- ‘A’ is used to denote cabriolet cars. By Cabriolet, we mean cars with a foldable soft-top
- ‘X’ is used to denote those SUVs that are designed from an already existing platform. For instance, the X164 GL is directly derived from the W164 ML
The Remaining Digits
The last 3 digits denote the particular generation in that body category. From these digits, you would also come to know the approximate model year. For instance, the “W211” chassis code denotes that it is the 3rd generation Mercedes-Benz E Class that was manufactured between 2002 and 2009
